Multi Spindle vs Swiss Screw Machining
Two distinct, essential, and complementary capabilities –
Multiple Spindle and Swiss Screw Machining
Providing the highest quality precision component parts at the lowest possible cost is our mission! This requires that our team selects the right machine for your part. We promise to use a process which is 100 percent capable of meeting the tolerances and workmanship you require while being committed to delivering the quantities needed to keep your lines running!
“Done in one” is most essential to customer satisfaction, “one” being one machining operation. Our customers truly benefit from having one supplier who excels in capacity and capability in the two forms of Screw Machining which are Multiple Spindle and Swiss style Screw Machining.
Swiss Screw Machining has progressed from its original purpose of manufacturing high precision parts for watchmakers to producing high-quality components for all industries. In modern manufacturing, Swiss screw machines are partnered with computer numerical control (CNC) systems that use computer codes to guide machining tools.
Benefits of Swiss Screw Machining:
- Complex Parts “done in one” as CNC permits up to 7 machining axes.
- Ideal for small parts between .093 (3/32” Round) and .250 (1/4” Round) and well suited for parts up to .750 (3/4” Round).
- Significantly less time and cost to tool that a Multi-Spindle machine
- Automation enabling lights out production is relatively affordable
- Time to train operators and set-up persons is less due to encoders and machine controls taking a level of “feel” and “experience” out of the critical tool setting and adjustment process.
For medium to high complexity, small precision parts, Swiss Screw machines are the best choice. Swiss Screw Machines can produce complex parts, machined on all surfaces “done in one.”
Multiple Spindle Screw Machining has progressed from machining screws (hence the term “Screw Machining”), to the highly efficient machining of a variety of precise component used by all industries. The development of specialized attachments which perform specialized processes such as threading, milling, broaching, skiving and part-marking to name a few, have broadened the useful application of these highly productive lathes. It is true to say that the 8- Spindle Multi-Spindle machine is the most productive lathe that exists in the world today!
Unlike Swiss Screw Machines, which at most can simultaneously have three machining processes occurring, Multi-Spindle Screw Machines with 5, 6, or 8 simultaneously working spindles, can have up to 14 operations occurring simultaneously. Furthermore, the use of form tools greatly reduces the time for each operation which is critical as the longest operation is what determines the part cycle time.
Multiple Spindle Screw machines are highly efficient with exceptionally fast cycle times resulting in superior rate of part production and are the most efficient production method for producing precision component parts.
Benefits of Multi-Spindle Screw Machining:
- 4x with 6X compared to Swiss Screw machining.
- Accommodates stock ranging from .3125 (5/16” Round) to 3.250 (3 ¼” Round).
- Tool positioning is maintained regardless of temperature fluctuations.
- Rugged threading and tapping attachments permit high quality, formed threads which are stronger than cut threads.
- Rugged part marking attachments are used allowing us to provide our customers’ logo and part number on their component without additional expense.
- Our crews are highly trained in the use of profile material. Using profile stock in lieu of milling a flat or hex saves time and material expense.
